Dental Oral Exam
Regular oral exams are an important part of your oral health. Dr. Samir Shah will evaluate your mouth for signs of gum disease, cavities and jaw problems. Our dental team will examine your teeth with x-rays, a cavity detecting laser and an intra-oral camera to identify areas of concern.
Oral hygiene includes the various oral care activities that you can implement at home, such as brushing and flossing. Although it sounds simple, brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day can help you to sustain a high level of cleanliness and hygiene over the interim period – in between getting them professionally checked and cleaned at the dentist’s office.
The dentist will fill horseshoe-shaped trays with a soft, gelatin-like material and place them over your upper or lower teeth. After a few minutes, the trays are removed and used to create a dental cast of your mouth. The dentist might also have you bite down on a soft material to record and evaluate your bite.
Diet is another essential aspect of your home care regime. Eating in moderation foods that are high in sugar and low in calcium is necessary if you wish to keep your teeth and gums in good shape.
Regular check-ups are important because neglecting dental conditions can lead to much more serious problems, such as:
- infected teeth.
- tooth loss and shifting teeth.
- receding gums.
- loss of bone in the jaw.
- painful jaw joints.
As well as the visual inspection of your mouth, the Complete Oral Exam will also include:
- An examination of your neck area, with the dentist feeling the glands and lymph nodes for possible signs of inflammation that could indicate general health problems.
- Dental x-rays, if necessary. These can show such problems as cavities under existing fillings, hairline fractures, impacted wisdom teeth, decay under your gum line and bone loss caused by gum disease.
With regular oral exams, we can detect problems early and help you maintain your oral and overall health.
