Root Canal Treatment
Root Canal Treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is needed when the pulp of the tooth is infected through decay or injury.
- You may not feel any pain during the early stages of infection.
- In some cases, your tooth may darken in color, it means that the nerve blood supply to the tooth is dying.
Root canal treatment is the dental specialty that deals with the nerves of the teeth. Root canals are probably the most notorious procedure in dentistry and the most common procedure relating to endodontics. When a tooth becomes infected it is usually related to the nerves in the root of the tooth. The infected nerves need to be removed. If left untreated an infection can turn into an abscess, which is a much more serious problem that includes bone loss in the jaw.
The pulp is soft tissue inside the tooth that contains blood vessels and nerves. When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, treatment is needed. The most common causes of pulp inflammation or infection are a cracked or chipped tooth, a deep cavity or filling, or other serious injuries to the tooth. All of these can allow bacteria to enter the pulp.
Further, the root canal surgery cost also varies depending on how complex the problem is and which tooth is affected. Generally, endodontic treatment and restoration of the natural tooth are less expensive than the alternative of having the tooth extracted.
